Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is a medicinal plant. This spiky plant has distinctive purple flowers and white leaf veins, a color that tradition says was caused by the Virgin Mary's breast milk when it fell on its leaves.
The active ingredient in milk thistle is a group of plant compounds known as silymarin. Milk thistle extract contains a large amount (65-80%) of silymarin. Silymarin extracted from milk thistle has antioxidant, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties.
